MORE ABOUT Faces | New York
I’ve spent my life studying skin. Not as a type or a trend, but as a living system shaped by environment, stress, hormones, and history.
Hi, I'm Crystal

Cleansing removes the day.
Toning resets the skin.

What comes next is where most people try to do the most.

And it’s also where things go sideways the fastest.

The Obsession With “Active”

There’s a quiet belief in skincare that stronger is better.
More actives. More correction. Faster results.

So people layer.

Vitamin C in the morning.
Retinol at night.
Acids in between.
Something new every few weeks when nothing seems to “work.”

And the assumption is that the skin just needs more.

More stimulation.
More turnover.
More push.

But skin doesn’t respond well to being pushed.

What Actives Are Actually Meant to Do

Actives aren’t meant to overwhelm the skin.
They’re meant to guide it.

To support processes that are already happening—cell turnover, repair, pigment regulation, collagen signaling.

Not force them.

When used well, they refine.
They correct gently.
They build resilience over time.

When used poorly, they create noise.

Redness.
Sensitivity.
Barrier disruption that gets mistaken for “purging” or “working.”

Why Things Start to Backfire

This is where most routines break down.

Skin that was just cleansed and rebalanced is suddenly hit with multiple signals at once.

Exfoliate.
Stimulate.
Brighten.
Turn over faster.

At some point, the skin stops responding clearly.

It becomes reactive.
Unpredictable.

And instead of pulling back, most people double down.

They switch products. Add more. Try again.

When often, the issue isn’t that nothing is working.

It’s that too much is happening at once.

A Word on Exosomes and “Next-Gen” Treatments

There’s a lot of excitement right now around advanced ingredients—exosomes, growth factors, regenerative technologies.

And they’re promising.

But even the most advanced technology still depends on the same foundation:

Healthy, balanced skin.

If the barrier is compromised, if the skin is inflamed, if the environment isn’t stable—those ingredients don’t perform the way they’re meant to.

They’re not a shortcut.

They’re an amplifier.

And what they amplify depends entirely on the condition of the skin they’re applied to.

How to Think About Actives Instead

Not as a stack.
Not as a routine to “keep up with.”

But as a conversation.

What does your skin actually need right now?

Support?
Correction?
Rest?

Some days, the answer is a targeted serum.
Other days, it’s nothing at all.

And that restraint is often what creates the best results.

What to Look For

A well-chosen active doesn’t overwhelm the skin.

It integrates.

You don’t feel like you’re fighting your skin to get results.
You don’t see cycles of irritation followed by recovery.

You see gradual change.

Texture softening.
Tone evening out.
Skin becoming more stable, not less.

The Shift

Actives aren’t where you prove how much you know about skincare.

They’re where you show restraint.

Because real change doesn’t come from doing more.

It comes from doing the right thing, at the right time, on skin that’s actually ready for it.

And when that foundation is in place—clean, balanced, receptive—
even the most powerful ingredients don’t have to work as hard.

They just have to be used well.
